Re: Book Reviewer Wanted

"The Enemy Within", by Jay M. Gould, paperback,
1996, 346 pages, regular price, $14.95
available from AMAZON.CON for $11.95 (20 % off).

This book is a very scientific looking study that
"proves" that nuclear power plants cause elevated
breast cancer rates in near by couties, AIDS, low
birthweight babies, and more. It is a probably
a sample of the sort of thing that Caldicott and
company will offer in their sumposiun in Sept.
The book also has over 50 maps of each nuc
reactor in the country plus DOE facilities. The
maps show the counties within 100 miles and
highlight the ones with elevated brest cancer
rates. Tables are also given.

Refuting this sort of thing or even evaluating it
amy take some tiome, but needs to be done. The
book is by Gould with help from other members of
the Radiation and Public Health Project, including
Ernest Sternglass, Joseph Mangano and William
McDonald.

Speaking of Caldicott's symposiun in September,
her recent autobiography has interesting
information. "A Desperate Passion" by Helen
Caldicott, regular price $27.50 or $19.25
(30% off) from Amazon.com. Paperback, written
1997, 370 pages.

Ms. Caldicott (it is hard to call someone
doctor when they abandoned the profession 17
years ago and have not practiced it since) has
had numerous 2 day symposia starting about 15
years ago, with credits offered. In those
days, they seemed to deal with nuclear war,
but she always seemed to mix nuclear war and
nuclear power.

Page 212: "It was facinating to observe the
psychological reactions elicited by what I
had to say. I left many stunned people in
my wake, which was my intention."

Page 156: "If you look attractive, people
consider you trustworthy and they tend to
believe your logic, however radical. I
used to say, "If you wear pearls, you can
say anything."

Page 210: Concerning a 2 day symposium,
"At the end of the second day as I summed
up the data, I was deliberately emotive. ...
At a cocktail party afterwards people told
me: "You made me cry." That was precisely
what I intended. An emotional release after
two days of unrelenting awful information."

Are any RADSAFERs intendint to attend the
Sept symposium? We can sit back and bitch
to each other on our net or maybe we can
do something. Holliway is taking a very
good step, but we need to help him.

More is needed.
