85 Billion

<< In my opinion, the costs
involved in remediation are not always justified in terms of health
protection. However, the second principle seems to be a major concern
among vocal parts of the population; politicians often listen to the
more vocal groups. You can't hear people if they don't speak out. >>

I have been troubled and amazed by some of the figures being mentioned in
connection with cleanup, but there is one consolation. That figure of 85
billion will certainly grab the attention of Congress. Given the competing
needs of other programs, there will surely be a very careful review of the
proposed cost of cleanup. I would be willing to bet that when it comes to the
crunch, Congress will not spend 85 billion for this purpose.
