To put a slightly different slant on things.....
The 1 mSv protection limit for members of the public is interpreted in
Ireland as follows. It is assumed that a member of the public is more than
likely to come into contact with approx. 20 different -man-made- sources of
radiation in a year (don't ask me where this comes from...) ergo : we have
to shield each and every x-ray room to an annual doserate of 50 microSv (!)
which is quite a bit of extra concrete. Matters appear to get even worse
when new rules developed by the European Community become law in Ireland in
2000.

A question I have is if it is possible to start a thread on the EC
Directives ? This may also be of interest to the Americas as it poses
interesting questions re the philosophy behind radiation protection and the
question about acceptability of risks !
