April 22 Meeting of the Baltimore-Washinhton Chapter of the HPS
ANNOUNCEMENT:
JOINT MEETING OF THE BALTIMORE-WASHINGTON CHAPTER OF THE
HEALTH PHYSICS SOCIETY AND THE POTOMAC SECTION OF THE
AMERICAN INDUSTRIAL HYGIENE ASSOCIATION
The Baltimore-Washington Chapter of the Health Physics Society and the
Potomac
Section of the American Industrial Hygiene Association would like to
invite all
interested individuals in the Washington D.C. area and those who just
happen to be in the
area, to attend our joint meeting scheduled for Wednesday, April 22,
1998.
This is the second annual joint meeting of these two organizations. The
technical
program features a panel discussion on the revised respiratory
protection standards
recently issued by the Occupational Safety and Health Administration
(OSHA). The
discussion will include OSHA Health Compliance, Radiation Protection
Perspective,
and NIOSH Respirator Selection.
OSHA issued its final revised standard on respiratory protection on
January 8, 1998.
This is the first major revision to the standard since it was first
adopted from an industry
consensus standard in 1971. OSHA estimates that approximately 1.3
million
establishments use respirators. The agency's analysis of studies show
that, without a
reliable program, there is at least a 36 percent chance that a
respirator will fail to
achieve the minimum average effectiveness expected, thus placing the
wearer at
significant risk of exposure to dangerous levels of air contaminants.
