RE: DIVIDED DOSE I-131 THYROID TREATMENTS

We started using the release procedures of Reg Guide 8.39 as soon as they
were authorized on May 29, 1997. The new criteria eliminated a lot of work
and expense for I-131 patients. For brachytherapy there was an increase in
requirements, specifically, written instructions and the lower limits
conflict occasionally with permanent I-125 brain implants. The release
limit went from 5 mrem at one meter to 1 mrem. Also, for
radiopharmaceuticals, more attention is required for breast-feeding
patients. Overall, the change was positive for our program.
