Re: Radiation doses from coal

According to UNSCEAR 1993: Normalised collective doses from old and modern coal
fired plants
are 6 and 0.5 man Sv per GW annum, excluding China. Due to higher than average
radionuke concentrations in Chinese coal, lower filter efficiencies and the high
population density around Chinese plants, in China the normalised dose is
estimated to be 50 man Sv per GW annum. Assuming 1/3 of world's power generated
at modern plants, 1/3 at old plants and 1/3 from Chinese plants, world average
normalised collective dose is 20 man Sv per GW annum. Total collective dose for
all nuclear power reactors is 1.4 man Sv per GW annum.

Radsafers,

When I visited the last RRS Meeting (Radiation Research Society) three
weeks ago - one physician from the Chicago area (can't remember his name
at this moment) mentioned that after replacing some nuclear power plants
with coal fired in the Chicago area, the radiation doses went up. I have
previously seen data on this (Health Physics??). Anyone who could
comment or give references or any info about data? If dose estimates
aren't available, the released activity would also/still be of interest
(preferably given as nuclide specific Bq/TWh or something similar).
Measered or calculated is a question in itself BTW.
