The gamma rays will produce Compton electrons which will produce Cherenkov radiation.

I have a comment regarding the article you read. I thought that the Cherenkov
radiation is caused by a charged particle moving faster that speed of light in
medium. Gamma ray is not a charged particle. Gamma ray is electromagnetic wave
and it cannot travel beyond the speed of light in vaccum (air?). This is purely
my opinion based on limited knowledge. M. Jo
