Taiwan Pulls out of North Korea Radioactive-wastes Deal

A Korea Herald report on May 26 said that
Taiwan had broken off talks with Pyongyang to
ship a quantity of radioactive wastes from its
nuclear power plants to North Korea. However,
Taipei had yet to make an official statement.

Taiwan's Taipower Company signed a
U.S.$70-million agreement with Pyongyang last
January to export 60,000 barrels of radioactive
wastes to North Korea. The deal apparently will
not consummate because North Korea reportedly
refuses to detail the conditions of its storage
facilities or transport. The Taiwan Atomic
Energy Council had demanded the information.

North Korea had said it would store the waste in
an abandoned coal pit 120 kilometers south of
Pyongyang and 90 kilometers north of Seoul.
