The University of California, San Diego has a job opening for a Radiation Safety Technician. The Tech would join a Radiation Safety Group of 10 individuals who oversee and assist the campus in its research and patient care efforts.
There are approximately 3500 people involved wih radioisotopes and radiation either on the campus or at one of two hospitals. Also included is Scripps Institution of Oceanography which has four research vessels that perform worldwide ocean research. The campus is located in La Jolla (10 miles north of downtown).

Responsible for many of the daily aspects of the Radiation Safety Program. Duties include performing laboratory audits for radioactive users facilities; inspecting lasers, microwave producing equipment and EMF emitters; performing wipe tests on sealed sources; operating the isotope shipping and receiving laboratory; conducting bioassays; calibrating and inventorying survey instruments; gathering and counting environmental samples; responding to emergencies and spills. SPECIAL CONDITIONS OF EMPLOYMENT: Must pass a medical examination and be cleared to perform physical requirements and wear respirators, Self-contained breathing Apparatus and personal protective clothing. Valid CA Driver's license. Must be available for overtime and call-back. REQUIREMENTS: Working knowledge of California Radiation Control Regulations and U.S. Department of Transportation regulations relative to the control and use of radioactive materials, the shipping and receiving of radioactive materials, radiation dosimetry, contamination control, radiation shielding. Working knowledge of the Broadscope Type A Radioactive Materials license. Detailed knowledge of the ALARA lab audit process and ability to conduct laboratory audits. Proven ability to effectively use the ALARA reporting and scoring system and to write effective critiques in order to gain regulatory compliance of the labs. Knowledge of the principles of external radiation dosimetry and of biological uptake of radioisotopes in humans. Basic radioisotope handling techniques. Skill to perform radioisotope measurement/analysis techniques using: liquid scintillation, NaI spectroscopy, and survey equipment using Geiger counters, NaI monitors, ion chambers, gas proportional counters. Computer skills to utilize complex software and databases. Proven ability to organize work and work independently exercising good judgment with high attention to detail and accuracy.
