Radioactive Sources

Gulf Nuclear has not manufactured sealed sources for the last 10-15 years.
The assets of the company were purchased by Amersham. Unfortunately, none
of the sources manufactured were built to a specification drawing as most
of the sources were what were called "variable dimension " sources. The
Model name VDHP designated "Variable Dimension High Pressure".

The purchasers of Gulf sources who have called NSSI have been unable to get
source certificates from Gulf or Amersham and have had to retire the
sources from use and most have been disposed. 

Gulf sources also have a high incidence of "indicated" leakage from routine
wipe tests. The sources aren't usually leaking but are giving positive
wipes due to radio contamination of the weld during fabrication.
