Fwd: angiostatin (radiation therapy enhancers)

I forwarded the RADSAFE message to my uncle, a PhD Biochemist, who wrote back
to me with this tidbit. Thought it might interest some RADSAFERS.

It follows the generally accepted theory that tumor growth requires the
development of new blood vessels and that if this growth can be interrupted
then tumor won't grow. Two other approaches that have had some success are
(1) the use of fluorocarbon oxygen carriers that, when combined with
radiation, cause more damage than radiation alone becaue the higher oxygen
content produces more reactive oxygen species (ROS) that initiate necrosis
likely because of damage to the blood vessel, and (2) the use of photodynamic
agents (dyes that on exposure to light cause formation of ROS with the same
effect. The latter is being pursued by Quadralogics; you may want to see if
they have a web site. >>

Life in the big apple is good. Marilyn and I spent yesterday at the JAL
classic, the women's LPGA golf tournament that is held at a golf course two
block from our house. We had a pro and her caddy/teacher for dinner last
night. This was not her regular caddy, but rather an excellent professional
teacher that Stephen and I once took lessons from. She was caddying so she
could see directly what was happening with the swing on course. The pros name
is Peggy Jordan. She likely will finish out of the money today.

Mar goes to the lake today for several days and likely will return late
Wednesday when Cara and Stefan arrive for a long weekend.

Take care.
