Russia To Build New Nuclear Plant
Nuclear option still viable in some countries
------------------
Thursday July 30 9:17 PM EDT
MOSCOW (AP) - Russia plans to build a new nuclear plant and
two new nuclear reactors by 2000, a spokesman for the
Atomic Energy Ministry said Thursday.
Spokesman Georgy Kaurov refused to confirm, however, that the
government has approved construction of four new nuclear
plants by 2010 and is drafting plans for another four, as a
newspaper reported.
The Moscow Times quoted the Atomic Energy Ministry as saying
such a plan had been signed by Prime Minister Sergei
Kiriyenko, and would increase Russia's nuclear energy output by
one-third.
Kaurov confirmed that one new nuclear plant would be built at
Rostov-on-Don in southern Russia. And two new reactors
would be built at existing plants in Kursk in central Russia and in
Kalinin north of Moscow.
Each reactor will cost about $1.5 billion, he said.
The 1986 Chernobyl nuclear accident in Ukraine created
widespread public distrust of nuclear energy and encouraged
Russia
to exploit huge natural gas deposits for energy instead.
But Russian energy experts have argued that new nuclear plants
are necessary to guarantee the country's energy
self-sufficiency, and to replace aging reactors that will have to be
closed in coming years.
