Detection criteria for frisker probe.

I'm conducting an informal survey to see what the Industry is using
for frisker detection decisions, particularly when using a 15-20 cm2
GM "pancake" probe in backgrounds of 40-80 cpm.

Do you call an item contaminated at the critical level (i.e., Sc
or Lc see NUREG/CR-4007, L.A. Currie) or at the detection level
(i.e., Sd, or Ld, see NUREG/CR-4007, L.A. Currie)? Or do you call
something contaminated whenever count rate is perceived to increase
        audibly or visually by meter?

     Note - I am aware of Sommer's paper, IEC 81-07, IEN 85-92, HPPOS-072,
HPPOS-250. What I'm looking for is how these guiding documents are
applied when releasing large, bulk materials suspected of being
     externally contaminated (disregard internal contamination,
non-aggregate or liquid samples, small or personal hand carried items
     and personnel).

Please respond directly to John_McCarthy@BEDISON.com or call
     508-830-8158.

Thank you in advance for your responses.

     Jack
