Cancer Mortality Following I-131 Treatment

Hi RadSafers and MedPhys:

You might find the following, recently published paper of interest:

"Cancer Mortality Following Treatment for Adult Hyperthyroidism" by Elaine Ron et al, Journal of the American Medical Association (JAMA), July 22/29, 1998 - Vol 280, No. 4.

This is a retrospective cohort study of 35,593 hyperthyroid patients treated between 1946 and 1964. 65% were treated with I-131.

I first became aware of this study via a news blurb in my local newspaper which (of course!) failed to mention the source of the study. However, using the incredible power of the internet, I was able to ferret out the source of the information.

It's too bad it didn't get the top of the fold, front page coverage that a Wing, Sternglass, Stewart, Gofman, etc. paper would have received, but I have to be happy that it, at least, was published in a one column, two inch blurb on the bottom of page 6!

Enjoy!,
