M. Jo,

One problem that I have had in the past is the coating of the inner surface
of the detector with a mist of oil from bad gas.  If you continue to have
the problem, you should consider removing the detector from its shield and
using an alcohol based cleaner to carefully remove the oil from the inside
of the detector.
