RE: Survey instruments w/ fixed contamination

Section 4.1(1) of ANSI N323-1978, "Radiation Protection Instrumentation
Test and Calibration," states, "The instrument should be free of
significant radioactive contamination." The amount of contamination that
would be "significant" of course would depend on the type and range of
the instrument.

In practice, at the Harris Nuclear Plant, I don't think we've ever had
to calibrate an instrument that had any fixed contamination on it. Any
loose contamination would be removed before the instrument goes to the
calibration facility.
