Re: genetic instability




Genomic instability is a term used to describe the variety of genomic
alterations, mutations, chromosomal translocations and gene amplifications
that can occur in the mammalian genome. Numerous metabolic pathways direct
the duplication and distribution of DNA to daughter cells while others
maintain the genetic information encoded by DNA which regulates the
expression of genes. These pathways are often refered to as genomic
stability functions. Both high and low LET radiation can induce genomic
instability -- and irradiated cells often have an increased number of
chromosomes (known as aneuploidy) just as frequently observed in cancer cells.
