Nuclear Waste Issues

Nuclear Storage Discussed - (VERNON) -- Officials from the
Vermont Yankee Nuclear Power Plant have met to discuss
what they will do after they run out of spent fuel storage space in
the year 2001. Plant spokesman Brian Cosgrove says the
plant can either seek federal approval to place additional fuel rods
in the spent fuel pool, or begin storing the material above
ground in dry concrete casks. The discussion took place at a
meeting of the Vermont State Nuclear Advisory Panel in
Brattleboro.

Fight Over Nuclear Dump Heats Up - (EL PASO) -- The U-S Senate
is expected to vote next month on whether to build
a low-level radioactive waste dump in West Texas. Meanwhile,
allegations are flying from all sides on the proposal. Disposal
officials have released a document that says the dump will be
safe... but residents around Sierra Blanca aren't so sure. They
claim their health will be at risk. The site would hold tons of
radioactive waste from Maine and Vermont.
