radioactive scrap metal destroys 100 tonnes of steel

** RADIOAKTIVT SKROT FÖRSTÖRDE 100 TON STÅL
100 ton rostfritt stål tillverkat av Avesta Sheffield har visat sig vara
radioaktivt. Upptäckten gjordes vid Avesta Sheffields smältverk i
lördags. (TT)

This piece of news in Swedish, apparently from Sept. 1, was forwarded to me
a couple of minutes ago. Apart from what's in the subject line it also says
that the discovery was made in one of Avesta Sheffield's smelter in Avesta,
Sweden.

There is more information to be read about this at:
http://www.avesta-sheffield.se/news/pressreleas_radio.htm
for those of you able to read Swedish. It seems that the steel gave a
radiation level of 10 microSv per hour compared to the background level of
0.15 microSv per hour. The incident has been reported to the Swedish
Radiation Protection Institute and the steel is currently stored separately
while the investigation goes on. It was the smelter's own checking routines
that detected the increased radiation level.
