RE: What do you mean I'm not covered?!



Although I'm not an insurance expert, I imagine that the exclusion of
coverage for "loss or damage arising out of Ionizing radiation or
radioactivity" is in at least some aircraft insurance policies because of
the large number of older aircraft which still have radium painted
instruments installed.  I'm not saying that there is a real hazard here, but
there is a potential for insurance claims.

Although the phosphor has long since died away, the radium and its progeny
are still there.  The benefit associated with being able to see the
instruments at night is now gone but the potential for dose remains.  The
reason that so many are still out there is because they are fairly expensive
to replace.

I personally haven't looked at a lot of old cockpits, but I understand that
fields of several hundred uR/h (microR/h) and higher are not uncommon.
