Nuclear Waste Disposal Issues
Nuclear Dump Given Federal Green Light - (SIERRA BLANCA) -- It
will now be up to lawmakers in the Texas legislature to decide
whether a low-level nuclear waste dump will be built near Sierra
Blanca. President Clinton has signed a law approving the project.
The site, 90 miles southwest of El Paso, would be used for burial of
radioactive material from Maine and Vermont. The two states would
pay Texas 55-Million dollars for the long-term storage. Opponents
are vowing to take their case before the legislature when it meets in
January.

Old Nuclear Reactor Disposal Debated - (RAINIER) -- Oregon
energy officials hope neighboring Washington state will
approve a plan for getting rid of the old Trojan Nuclear Reactor.
Trojan's parent company closed the reactor in the town of
Rainier (ray-NEER)... north of Portland... several years ago. Oregon
hopes to bury it at Washington's Hanford Nuclear Reservation.
David Stewart- Smith of Oregon's Energy Facility Siting Council
says the panel hopes to take the reactor to Hanford by truck or
barge next year. Stewart-Smith says the council is expected to
approve the plan next month. This month, Washington health
officials also are scheduled to meet to discuss their findings.
