DOE Says Yucca Mountain Is Safe

DOE Says Yucca Mountain Is Safe - (WASHINGTON, D.C.) -- The
Department of Energy says Yucca Mountain, Nevada, is a good
spot for a permanent nuclear waste dump. U-S Senator Larry Craig
of Idaho is trying to get a temporary dump opened at Yucca
Mountain. The Republican wants the site opened now so that
waste stored in Idaho can be moved there. Nevada Democrat Harry
Reid has been fighting that... and he says the report means
nothing to him. Don't look for a final assessment on Yucca
Mountain to be released until after the November third election.

...Nuclear Plant May Reopen - (DECATUR) -- Illinois Power officials
now think they may get their Clinton Nuclear Power plant up and
running as early as January. More than two years after a shut-down
of the plant, the company is still working to make sure the nuclear
plant complies with all regulations before they re- start it. I-P
Chairman Charles Bayless says there are still several tests that
must be done before an official re- opening date can be set. The
plant was shut-down after a pump seal
leak in 1996.

ComEd offers nuclear managers buyouts

The packages offer 50 percent of annual base salary plus 2 percent
for each year with the company, ComEd said. Unicom has about
17,000 employees.

``We are continually reviewing our staffing needs, across the
board,'' Chris Crane, vice president for Boiling Water Reactors, said
in a news release. ``Further reductions will be considered if
opportunities are identified that would contribute to sizing site staffs
to be more effective and efficient, or if it makes good
business sense.''
