Update to MILDOS-AREA Computer Code

Radsafers,

The U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission (NRC) is currently engaged in a project to develop a user-friendly interface (a GUI for Windows) and a user's manual for the MILDOS-AREA code. MILDOS-AREA is used (by NRC staff and by licensee facilities) to calculate radiation doses received by individuals and the general population around operating uranium recovery facilities (mills or in-situ leach facilities) from releases to air.

At this time, a beta version of the software and a draft of the user's manual have been developed. The NRC encourages any interested people to download the software, become beta testers, and provide comments on the code interface and user's manual. More information can be found through the NRC's web page. To get there, go to
http://www.nrc.gov/
and go to the Radioactive Waste page, and then scroll down to "Uranium Recovery Activities", and then follow the link to "Update to MILDOS-AREA Computer Code". Or, go directly to
http://www.nrc.gov/NRC/NMSS/URANIUM/mildos.html
This page provides a link to the contractor's web page, where you can download the software, obtain the draft user's manual, and find other information about the MILDOS-AREA code.

We expect to finish work on this update to the MILDOS-AREA code in December 1998. Please feel free to contact me directly with related questions or comments.

Duane.
