Nuclear waste ssues in the news

Nuclear Waste Storage Worries Some - (GOLDEN) -- Some
environmentalists are worried about a temporary waste storage
program at Rocky Flats north of Golden. Radioactive waste from
the former nuclear weapons plant was to be shipped to the Waste
Isolation Pilot Project, or WIPP, in New Mexico. But WIPP's
opening has been delayed because of lawsuits and other legal
challenges. Officials at Rocky Flats say they plan to store some of
the waste, which is contained in 55-gallon drums until it can be
transported to WIPP. And that's what worries some
environmentalists.

Last Chance For Nuke Dump Appeal - (AUSTIN) -- Today is the
last day for an appeal of the decision to reject licensing of the
proposed Sierra Blanca low level nuclear waste dump. State
environmental regulators turned down the proposal last month after
two hearing examiners cited concerns about the potential for
earthquakes in the West Texas location. If a request is
filed for a rehearing, the state will determine if it's warranted.
