Open Examination for Health Physicists with the State of California



The State of California is now testing for the positions of Associate and
Assistant Health Physicist.  By passing one of these tests you will be
placed on a Civil Service list which will then allow you to be considered
for future HP job openings with the State of California Radiologic Health
Branch or Environmental Management Branch.   This test is to get on the list
only and does not imply you will be hired.  Currently positions exist in
Sacramento, Berkeley, San Jose, Los Angeles and Santa Ana.

Below find the typical tasks for each specification, minimum qualifications
and instructions on how to apply.  I am just the messenger!

Associate Health Physicist - salary ranges $3684 - $4441 per month
This is a full journey person and lead person level of the series.
Incumbents under direction perform the more difficult and complex HP work;
plan and conduct difficult studies, surveys, inspections, and investigations
of radiologic health hazards; evaluate license applications and determine
compliance with law and regulations in non-routine cases; develop and adapt
instrumentation for determination and measurement of radiation; review plans
and specifications and advise on design and modification of engineered
controls, including shielding and exhaust ventilation systems; provide
consultation and assistance to professional and technical personnel and
public and private entities and assist them in determining and obviating
radiation hazards; supervise decontamination procedures in case of
radiological incidents; conduct training courses; prepare technical reports
and correspondence.  Positions in this class are not supervisory.

Minimum qualifications for Assoc HP (must qualify by either pattern I, II or
III):  

I. 	One year as an Assistant HP at the State - OR -

II.	Possession of a valid certificate in diagnostic or therapeutic
radiologic technology or nuclear medicine technology issued by the State of
California DHS or possession of a HP technology certificate from an
accredited two-year program, AND six years of experience in a public health
Agency or county contract inspection agency or hospital conducting
investigations and surveying the use of radiologic equipment; providing
advice on safe practices in radiation; and compliance with rules and
regulations governing radiation use - OR -

III.	Three years of professional experience in HP or closely related
filed, at least two years of which must have included responsibility for
exercising independent judgement within a framework of general policies AND
graduation from college with a major in radiologic health, radiologic
science, health physics, engineering, mathematics, physical science, life
science or a closely related field.

Assistant Health Physicist - salary range $3200 - $3859 per month
Similar duties to Associate, but is the first working level of the series.
Assist higher level physicists with their duties and under supervision
perform duties in Assoc. class above.

Minimum qualifications Assistant HP (must qualify by either pattern I, II or
III):

I.	One year of performing duties of Junior Health Physicist at the
State of California - OR

II.	Possession of licenses listed in pattern II for Associate above AND
five years of experience as in above pattern II for Assoc. - OR -

III.	Two years experience in Health Physics or closely related field and
a college degree as specified in pattern III for Assoc. HP
