Article: No Hazardous Waste Found In Barrels

No Hazardous Waste Found In Barrels - (ALBUQUERQUE) --
Federal scientists say selected nuclear waste destined for a
repository near Carlsbad shows NO signs of hazardous material...
and should be allowed to move before a state permit is issued. The
U-S Department of Energy presented its findings yesterday to the
state Environment Department and asked the agency to allow them
to dump the material at the Waste Isolation Pilot Plant without a
permit. Last month, Susan McMichael, the state Environment
Department's WIPP Project Manager, said it would be next
summer before the DOE could expect a Resource Conservation
and Recovery Act permit for hazardous waste disposal. But the
state left the door open to the disposal of waste that could be
proven free of hazardous chemicals.
