laboratory surveys and inspections

Dear Radsafers -

The University of Rochester Radiation Safety Office is currently performing
monthly surveys of all posted laboratories. I am trying to turn the
majority of this responsibility over to the researchers so that we can
start performing less frequent but more thorough inspections. To support
this change, I am gathering information on the number of universities in
which researchers perform these surveys themselves. My guess is that very
few universities have this function supplied by Radiation Safety.

I would appreciate hearing from my fellow RSOs about:

- whether or not periodic surveys are performed by the researcher or by
radiation safety,
- how long you feel a realistic inspection should take
- how frequently your staff inspect laboratories
- how effective your laboratory inspection program is

Please respond directly to me and I will summarize for everyone else.

Thanks!

Andy
