Re[2]: Shipment of Radioactive Material

My understanding of 49 CFR leads me to think that transportation of
RAM in a personal auto is NOT specifically prohibited. Clearly, RAM
must be packaged and labeled properly depending on the class of
material, but once the package is in compliance, it can be transported
in any vehicle except if specifically prohibited (passenger aircraft,
etc.). This said, it does get a bit sticky when transporting
specification packages (yellow I-III) and consideration must be given
to vehicle marking for yellow III, and potential contamination
control. I do know that some of the nuclear medicine suppliers use
personal vehicles to transport their unit doses to serviced hospitals.
I hope this helps. If you want specifics, look in 49 CFR
173.421...This area of 49 CFR talks about shipping.

It is my understanding that 49 CFR regulates dangerous goods which are
transported "IN COMMERCE".
