Maine Yankee rate case resolution close - decommisioning $

Monday December 21, 3:53 pm Eastern Time

WISCASSET, Maine, Dec 21 (Reuters) - Owners of the retired
Maine Yankee nuclear power plant said on Monday they are close
to settling a rate case to pay for the decommissioning of the plant.

Maine Yankee Atomic Power Co. said that under a settlement
proposal to be reviewed on Tuesday by state officials, it would
collect $33.6 million a year from ratepayers through 2008 to pay for
decommissioning and spent fuel storage. Maine Yankee currently
collects $14.9 million a year, and had sought a boost to $36.5
million.

The plant, which was closed in August 1997, is owned by 10
utilities, with Central Maine Power Co. (NYSE:CTP - news) holding
a 38 percent stake, and Northeast Utilities (NYSE:NU - news) and
New England Electric System (NYSE:NES - news) each owning 20
percent.

If the Maine Public Utilities Commission agreed with the
settlement, the pact would then require the approval of the Federal
Energy Regulatory Commission, Maine Yankee said.
