Re: course information

Lerai,

There are numerous health physics training courses available; for example, see the Health Physics Society Newsletter. The choice depends on your goals and resources.

I mentioned the Baltimore-Washington Chapter's course on preparing for the Health Physics Certification Examinations as one option. For you, the probable option is as a correspondence student because commuting in from Reno every Thursday might present a problem. Most of the students do not actually take the Examinations, at least not soon after taking the course. They are taking the course to learn about health physics. Of course, what students get out of any course depends on what they put into it: do the work and learn or not as each person sees fit.

The course meets 6:00 to 9:00 every Thursday evening for 17 weeks starting February 4, 1999. The $575 tuition is low because it is an all-volunteer effort; no none gets paid although in a couple of instances there is partial reimbursement of travel expenses. As a correspondence student, you get a wealth of handout materials, periodic correspondence about the progress of the course, and the right to ask question of the lecturers and/or the staff. E mail questions work best but we do have telephones.

For more details, you are invited to contact Dr. Fred Ferate, the Chairman of the Education and Training Committee (fred.ferate@rspa.dot.gov).
