Re: Nitpicking

You're absolutely correct! To "effect" or "bring about" something,
such as change, etc. I give you an A+.

My Websters temporizes. It says in certain contexts assure, ensure,
and insure can be used interchangeably. A sign of the times, I guess.

'CAREFUL READERS! BIG BROTHER IS OUT THERE WATCHING YOU!'

P.S. (1) When you present a talk, please don't cross your hands in
front of you (fig-leaf). Just let them hang at your sides, or,
preferably, use them for natural gestures. (2) Don't pace back and
forth on the podium when you're away from the lectern; it's very
distracting. Stand in one place for at least a brief period. (3)
Maintain eye contact with individuals in the audience for at least 5
sec; remember, you're addressing only one individual at a time. (4)
You name tag should go on the right lapel or pocket. That way when
you shake hands with someone, that person can glance at your name tag
after looking at your right hand, just before making eye contact with
     you. Nuff said.

Right you are... but don't forget that 'effect' is also a verb when used in an
example like, "to effect a change." Yes, I'm also a nitpicker. Don't put me in
a room where the presenter uses 'insure' or 'assure' when he means 'ensure' !
