Re: EPDs for personnel monitoring and surveys

To add to the topic of relying on alarms EPDs, it is additionally foolhardy
for such total reliance due to the fact that not all EPD models have been ANSI
N42.17A (and C) tested for a variety of environmental conditions such as
temperature, shock, vibration, RFI, EMI, etc. Many Mfgrs. have tested for
such effects, but there are some EPD models out there that have not....and
those are the ones that can get you in trouble real fast especially when the
alarm is functionally dependent on correct detector response. Additionally,
some of those models that may have passed ANSI testing may have been modified
with no verification/validation of continued performance to the ANSI Stds. We
have seen and documented numerous cases of alarm failures due to this
situation since 1994.

Use the EPD and the hand-held survey instrument as a team.
