BACKGROUND
During the last decade, the threat of possible radioactive contamination of
arctic regions has attracted increasing international interest. Awareness of
the environmental vulnerability of the polar regions from radioactive
pollution has led to the development of national and international
scientific programs to describe the possible future situation and the
resulting consequences. Several scientific expeditions have been carried out
in the Arctic to monitor radioactivity from various sources. In 1998, AMAP
produced a comprehensive scientific assessment report regarding the
pollution of the Arctic, with a special focus on radioactivity.
The three previous international conferences on environmental radioactivity
in the Arctic have been held in Norway, in 1993 (Kirkenes), 1995 (Oslo) and
1997 (Tromsø).
TOPICS OF THE CONFERENCE
The conference will focus on radioactive contamination in the Arctic - the
transport and fluxes of radioactive elements through atmospheric,
terrestrial and marine environments; consequences of nuclear accidents;
nuclear safety and waste management.
The conference will be an important follow up to the AMAP work, both
regarding the scientific work and the future reporting to Ministers from the
eight Arctic countries. Also reports from other international projects will
be presented, such as AMEC (Arctic Military Environmental Co-operation),
IASAP (International Arctic Seas Assessment Programme) and EU research
programmes.
The main topics will be:
Arctic radioecology and vulnerability
Impact on man and the environment
Nuclear safety, waste management and possible impact of accidents
In addition following topics will be raised:
Risk management (issues on obtaining the highest risk reduction for the
available resources. The aim being to foster a closer link between the
assessment and monitoring programs and the action plans).
How to protect the environment itself (issues connected to the development
of a protection strategy for the environment, including dosimetry and
effects on biota).
