NRC selects 8 nuke sites for new inspection plan
WASHINGTON, Feb 23 (Reuters) - The Nuclear Regulatory
Commission on Tuesday said it has chosen nuclear plants at eight
sites to begin phasing in a new inspection, assessment and
enforcement plan during a six-month pilot program, starting June 1.
The new program will install a series of new administrative
processes meant to streamline agency inspections.
``The NRC is, therefore, moving to measure nuclear power plant
performance, using a combination of objective indicators, as well
as findings from an inspection program that will focus on plant
activities most important to safety and minimizing risk,'' said a
NRC statement.
The plants selected for the pilot program are: Hope Creek and
Salem 1 and 2 near Wilmington, Del., operated by Public Service
Electric and Gas, a unit of Public Service Enterprise Group
(NYSE:PEG - news); Fitzpatrick, near Oswego, N.Y., operated by
the Power Authority of the State of New York; Shearon Harris, near
Raleigh, N.C., owned by Carolina Light & Power Co; Sequoyah 1
and 2 near Chattanooga, Tenn., run by the Tennessee Valley
Authority.
Others sites are Northern States Power Co.'s (NYSE:NSP - news)
Prairie Island 1 and 2 near Minneapolis; Quad Cities 1 and 2 in
Moline, Ill., operated by Commonwealth Edison Co., a unit of
Unicom (NYSE:UCM - news); Ft. Calhoun near Omaha, Neb.,
owned by the Omaha Public Power District, and the Cooper plant
near Nebraska City, operated by the Nebraska Public Power
District.
The NRC said it worked with the nuclear industry to arrive at the
selected plants, and tried to assemble a group of volunteer
facilities that represented a wide range of performance levels.
Plants also were selected to provide both a mix of pressurized-
water and boiling-water reactors and facilities of different ages,
the NRC said.
