EDE and Form 5 Equivalent Methodology
I posted the following question to Radsafe back on
Sep 16, 1998, and received no responses. Perhaps this is the
same issue that Bob Ryan is wrestling with? I'm posting my
question again, hopefully to elicit some dialogue regarding the
methodology used.
I have a question related to how those who use dose weighting to
derive the EDE (Effective Dose Equivalent), when allowed by their
appropriate state agency, generate the Form 5 Equivalent, either
when required for the annual report to the agency and the
individual, or, if provided when an individual terminates employment.
Specifically, these are my questions and perspectives:
1. Each individual badge included in the dose weighting calculation
has its own deep, eye and shallow dose. The EDE is a separate
line on the report.
2. The EDE is based only on the deep dose (EDE is not calculated
for the eye and shallow doses since they are not technically
designated for dose weighting). This is for either a single dosimeter
or when two dosimeters are worn.
3. The NRC does not currently allow dose weighting, in that they
consider the weighting factor for whole body as 1. That may
change based on ANSI N13.41-1997, but for now, NRC licensees
can not use dose weighting. Therefore, the information I need is
ONLY for those states that do permit dose weighting, for official
dose of record.
4. The Form 5 Equivalent, columns 11 (deep), 12 (eye) and 13
(shallow) are required to be filled-in. IF the facility uses dose
weighting, do you enter the EDE in column 11 (deep) and make a
statement in column 19 (comments) that dose weighting was used?
5. Are columns 12 and 13 left blank, or, NA or NC entered since
there is no EDE for eye or shallow?
6. What do you enter in column 17 for TEDE and 18 for TODE?
The Form 5, as we all have known it, could change drastically as
more facilities are moving towards reporting EDE as the official
dose of record. Perhaps there needs to be a new field on the Form
5 to incorporate this.
I would appreciate anyone's perspective on this method of dose
reporting, how you do it, or how the specific state requires this
information to be documented.
Thanks....
