San Onofre Nuclear Power Plant to Host Open House for Science
Fair Winners

SAN CLEMENTE, Calif., March 2 /PRNewswire/ -- The San Onofre
Nuclear Generating Station (SONGS), operated by Southern
California Edison (SCE), will host its annual Nuclear Challenge
Science Fair Open House on Saturday, March 13, from 8 a.m. to
noon. Local elementary school students who completed this year's
science ``challenge'' will be honored at an awards ceremony during
the event. Friends and family members of winners can view student
projects and learn more about nuclear power, electricity generation
and the environment.

Area students were given three months to solve real-world scientific
challenges posed by a team of local educators and SONGS
employees. Judges traveled to participating schools to evaluate the
projects. All students who submitted a qualifying entry were
declared winners and invited to the San Onofre plant for a day of
celebration.

     This year's challenges included:

     -- Identifying 10 Y2K problems and their solutions;

     -- Developing a method for purifying water;

     -- Designing a vehicle using two or more recyclable items; and

     -- Designing a container suitable for transporting radioactive
        materials.

For the past eight years, SCE has sponsored the Nuclear
Challenge Science Fair to encourage local students to consider
scientific issues and science- related careers.

Media wishing to attend this year's event must call (800) 332-3612.
Attendance is by invitation only.
