Radiation Safety Officer Position



Applications are being solicited for Radiation Safety Officer, University of
North Carolina at Chapel Hill.

The Radiation Safety Officer will plan, organize, and direct a proactive
radiation safety program for a major research university, including
contractual services for the UNC Healthcare System; supervise a staff of
three health physicists and three safety officers to conduct surveillance of
the use of radioactive materials and radiation producing devices to ensure
compliance with the NC Radiation Protection Regulations; and participate in
the planning and oversight of laboratory inspections conducted as part of
the Collaborative Laboratory Inspection Program to ensure that radiation
safety needs are met.  Responsibilities include oversight of a broad scope
academic radioactive material license, a broad scope medical use radioactive
material license, two irradiator licenses, two accelerator licenses, and
numerous research, medical and dental x-ray units.  The program monitors 280
faculty authorized to use radioactive material and 2,000 employees who use
radioactive material or radiation producing devices.  Experience in research
and medical use of lasers is desirable.  Ph.D. or Master’s degree in
radiological safety plus 10 years of progressively responsible experience is
required.
