The UNLV Department of Environmental Health & Safety is pleased to announce
that it is accepting applications for three Safety Officer positions.
These positions report to the Director of EH&S.
The Radiological Safety Officer is responsible all Radiological Safety
Programs on the University of Nevada, Las Vegas, and Community College of
Southern Nevada campuses. These programs include but are not limited to
(1) maintenance of State licenses, (2) maintenance and registrations of
radiation producing machines, (3) approve applications and protocols for
use of radioactive materials, sources or devices, (4) verify compliance
with regulations and license provisions, (5) maintain radiation dosimetry
program, (6) inspect and survey lab facilities, (7) implement procedures to
assure commitment to ALARA program, (8) manage an inventory of radioactive
materials and wastes, (9) manage a central ordering, receiving and delivery
program for radioactive materials, (10) respond to all accidents and
incidents involving ionizing and/or non-ionizing radiation, (11) manage
radiological waste, (12) train faculty, staff and students, (13) supervise
technical staff. Minimum requirements are a Bachelor's Degree in Health
Physics, Nuclear Medicine, or related discipline with seven years of
progressively increasing responsible experience involving a very broad
spectrum of radioactive materials. A Master's Degree or Certification as a
Health Physicist is desirable but not required. The applicant must have
knowledge and understanding of (1) NRC regulations and safety issues, (2)
biological, medical or health effects of exposure to ionizing and
non-ionizing radiation, (3) be familiar with EPA and OSHA regulations, (4)
radiological waste packaging procedures, (5) radiological spill control
materials and procedures, (6) container handling tools, (7) sampling and
monitoring equipment, (8) personal protective equipment, and (9) ability to
handle, manage, and move a full 55 gallon drum.
The Occupational Safety Officer is responsible for Occupational Safety
Programs on the UNLV campus. These programs include but are not limited to
(1) Hazard Communication, (2) Hazard Assessment, (3) Biological Safety, (4)
Respiratory Protection, (5) Blood Borne Pathogens, (6) Confined Space, (7)
Lockout/Tagout, (8) Indoor Air Quality Issues, and (9) Hearing
Conservation. Minimum requirements are a Bachelor's Degree in Occupational
Safety, or related discipline with seven years of progressively increasing
responsible experience, and a background in Organic Chemistry. A Master's
Degree or Certification in Industrial Hygiene is desirable but not
required. The applicant must have knowledge and understanding of (1)
federal and state OSHA regulations and be familiar with EPA regulations,
(2) managing and cleaning up chemical spills, (3) the use of instruments
for monitoring and sampling work environments, (4) reading and reviewing
blueprints and construction drawing for safety code compliance, (5)
personal protective equipment, (6) the use of engineering controls to
reduce and/or eliminate workplace hazards, (7) provide training to faculty,
staff and students, and (8) supervise technical staff.
The Fire Safety Code Officer is responsible for Fire and Life Safety
Programs on the UNLV campus. These programs include but are not limited to
(1) fire safety inspections of buildings for exiting, fire protection
systems, housekeeping, electrical and hazardous materials, (2) emergency
evacuation programs, signage, plans, and drills, (3) coordination of fire
protection systems certifications, (4) NFPA Hazard signage, and (5) review
architectural plan for new construction and renovations to assure
compliance with fire safety and building safety codes. Minimum
requirements are a Bachelor's Degree in Fire Science or Related discipline
and five years of progressively increasing responsible experience. The
applicant must have knowledge and understanding of (1) NFPA standards and
codes, and Uniform Building and Plumbing Codes, (2) the operation of fire
protection systems, (3) be familiar with state of Nevada Fire Marshal, OSHA
and ADA regulations, (4) be capable of reading blueprints and construction
drawings, (5) provide training to faculty, staff and students, and (6)
supervise technical staff.
Additionally, all applicants should have the ability to coordinate program
activities and work independently, demonstrate oral and written
communication skills, ability to communicate in a workplace and classroom
training setting, and demonstrate computer literacy including use of word
processing, database and spreadsheet programs.
Salaries for each position are commensurate with training and experience
