Senior Technician
Full Time Staff Position
Grade: 5
Description Of Duties:
Responsibilities include but are not limited to:
Audits and inspections of laboratories and work sites of radioactive
material users, including compliance with record keeping, area monitoring,
training, waste disposal practices and all other requirements for use of
radioactive isotopes. Audit radioactive materials inventory and disposal
logs, training requirements, security violations, spill reports and all
other incident reports.
Perform routine and special surveys of areas for ambient radiation exposure
levels and surface contamination; taking and counting wipes to assay
removable contamination; measuring effluent releases; calibrating survey
meters, dose calibrators, uptake probes, well counters and other radiation
monitoring and assay instrumentation. Inventory and leak test sealed
sources. Evaluate and provide assistance in controlling spills of
radioactive materials. Collect, process and monitor radioactive wastes.
Conduct radioactivity surveys of patients and provide proper paper work for
chart postings and nursing instructions. Reply to questions and respond to
requests for information from radiation workers. Issue, collect and control
personnel and area monitoring devices. Conduct a bioassay program, including
whole body counting, urinalysis, thyroid uptake counting, etc.. The Senior
Technician must be available 24 hours on-call and provide coverage at
outlying locations.
Process orders for radioisotopes, receive shipments of packages containing
radioisotopes; survey and inspect for removable contamination; distribute to
authorized laboratories. Maintain inventories of radioisotopes and lists of
Responsible Investigators.
Maintain documents and records of all activities and functions as required.
Monitor safety procedures to ensure compliance with appropriate safety rules
and regulations of Columbia-Presbyterian Medical Center and governmental
regulatory agencies. Perform other related duties as requested.
Qualifications:
B.S. Degree in health physics, physics, or an allied field, and two years
experience in radiation safety. Must be able to work occasional overtime and
respond to emergency calls during off-hours. Must have sufficient strength
and stamina to perform the necessary tasks associated with radioactive waste
disposal. Computer literacy is required.
