POSITION TITLE:
Specialist
(Assistant Radiation Safety Officer)

POSITION DESCRIPTION:
This position will assist the Radiation Safety Officer or designee in
the implementation and maintenance of the University's broadscope,
Gamma-Knife and High Dose Radiation After-Loader licenses.  Duties of
this position:

*	Assist in establishing and implementing campus policies and
procedures for the use of radiation, act as campus liaison with federal,
state and local regulatory agencies and occasionally serve as the
University's Radiation Safety Officer.
*	Develops and implements training programs, conducts classes,
seminars and/or workshops on a full range of subjects relating to
radiation protection as well as consulting with the University community
regarding the safe and legal handling of radioactive material.
*	Prepares and reviews reports and recommendations on radiation
safety management issues, cost containment, program development and the
control of radiological health hazards and has responsibility for
coordinating the sampling, identification and evaluation of radioactive
materials.
*	Under the direction of the Radiation Safety officer develop and
implement policies, procedures, recommendations and programs for the
safe use of radioactive materials in a manner both effective and
consistent with University's need, while maintaining a high degree of
customer service.
*	Provide guidance, training and supervision to the Radiation
Safety Associates and Assistants and coordinate document and manage
emergency response efforts.

This position requires the ability to recognize and cope with a variety
of personnel and the ability to prioritize a heavy workload to meet
departmental and regulatory guidelines while delivering the highest
degree of customer service.  The position will perform analyses,
calculations and evaluations to assess dose, exposure and/or risk to
workers and members of the general public from radiation.


QUALIFICATIONS:
Bachelor's Degree in Health Physics and three years of closely related
experience.  The preferred candidate will have a degree in Health
Physics from programs accredited by the Health Physics Society.  Master'
s degree in Health Physics preferred.

The successful candidate must have excellent oral and written
communication skills and good interpersonal skills.  Ability to use
computer equipment word processing software to write reports and be able
to create and manage MS Access databases in support of various radiation
safety, occupational safety and environmental projects as needed.
Candidate must be able to participate in the Environmental Health &
Safety 24-hour ensured response team and have the ability to respond
(sometimes in person) to emergency calls within 1 hour.


SALARY:
Salary commensurate with experience.
