Radiation Instrument's 8-bit or 16-bit microprocessor

 I  am researching radiation Instrument and portable scintillation radiation
Surveymeter.
Also, I have used Eberline e-600, ludlum digital instrument.
By the way, This product is 8-bit micro-processor surveymeter.
Why they use 8-bit micro-processor ?

When I design portable radiation instrument,
What it select both 8-bit and 16-bit micro-processor ?
