Re: Pissing away tritium

The reason that beer (a depressant) has been recommended is that it suppresses anti-diuretic hormone (ADH) causing more frequent urination. Frequent ingestion of beer post-tritium intake is thought to put pressure on the systemic to keep up with the beer intake through urinary removal with a subsequent quickening of the transfer of systemic hydrogen (metabolic rate) thus helping to remove systemic tritium. This method is only as good as the subject's ability to maintain intake before falling asleep or repression of rapid clearance from the stomach following overdose. Therefore, I would think the beer method would only be viable for helping to reduce large suspected doses of tritium where the problem has been recognized within a short time-frame post-take.

Another drug that has been widely recommended is caffeine (a stimulant) which quickens the metabolic rate with the subsequent increase of urine output. The advantage to this method would be in the subject's ability to maintain continous intake for long periods of time, such as driving coast-to-coast round trip, which could approach on biological halflife of tritium in the body. However, the anticipated dimentia from lack of sleep is not something that should be overlooked. Also, if there is not a associated repression in ADH during caffeine beverage intake, the subject could be left in a very uncomfortable condition. Perhaps a combination therapy is in order, although literature on the subject is lacking.

In general, I guess it all depends on which end of the spectrum you wish to catch your buzz.

Vince Chase

I'm having a bit of a problem with a short-term beer treatment for tritium
ingestion.
