Re: U in coal and minerals

Although the subject of uranium deposition strays considerably from my
expertise in geology (geomorphology, neotectonics, hydrogeology), I
expect that locations of uranium deposits are influenced by preferred
groundwater flow paths. This would explain zonation within lignite
deposits and shales and uranium mineralization of degradable organic
remains in a less permeable matrix, both situations due to higher rates
of U-bearing waters flowing through slightly more porous zones. Also,
precipitation of uranium minerals would probably be induced in the
mixing zone of groundwaters with two different geochemistries.
