INTERNATIONAL NEWS: --THERE'S NO SCIENTIFIC REASON TO LOWER REGULATORY DOSE
LIMITS, France's National Academy of Medicine says in an opinion on "nuclear
energy and health," released today in Paris. The Academy's Committee on
public health, epidemiology, and environment said risks of nuclear energy
must be compared to those of other energy producing technologies and that
the public must be told that "there is no biological or epidemiological
argument justifying the lowering of the maximum permissible radiation dose,
envisaged by the European Community." It is the third time the Academy has
come out against the new European limit, based on 1990recommendations of the
International Commission on Radiological Protection (ICRP), of 1
millisievert per year for members of the public, instead of 5 mSv/yr in
current regulations.
