J. Howe, 88, helped
Develop first reactor
SAN DIEGO-Physical chemist John P. Howe, who helped develop
the world's first nuclear reactors as part of the famed Manhattan
Project team, has died, He was 88.
Mr. Howe, who lived in La Jolla, died June 13 as a result of
complications from a fall, his family said.
Mr. Howe was a 32-year-old chemistry professor at Brown
University when he was recruited to study nuclear energy under
physicist and Nobel Prize laureate Arthur Compton at the
University of Chicago.
Using the code name "Metallurgical Laboratory," the team
sought to create the world's first self-sustaining nuclear
chain reaction. On Dec. 2, 1942, the Manhattan Project
succeeded.
