The fact that there is or is not a potential dose in the area still
requires that an appropriate number of Control Badges be placed
throughout the area of concern. If there are different dose values
for the various Control Badges, the various racks may need to be
processed with different Control Badge subtraction.
If the shielding is not valid, and the TLDs do in fact receive 20 to
40 mrem background due to operations, and appropriate Controls are
not placed, false dose may be assigned to the worker. I'd also bet
that this potentially false dose would end up biting you later in a
litigation claim .. and try to explain the Controls used (not used),
shielding, and the fact that staff dosimeters were maintained in an
area where there was a high potential to receive semi-continual
exposure from operations within the facility.
