Also, to further speculate...  the skin erythema onserved might be due to
acid burns instead of alpha burns.  I can't think of any reason one would
get much in the way of alpha exposure that was noted in at least one report.

My point in the previous post about air absorption is that maybe it could be
neutron dose with a huge source term, but I would bet on a release and
fallout for elevated background two kilometers away.  Gammas aren't gonna
get there and leave anyone on site alive, and I doubt that neutrons could
raise background by a factor of ten at two kilometers and not kill a  whole
bunch of folk on the accident site.
