Japan vs. TMI
Comparing these two incidents (the recent accidental criticality in Japan
and the Three Mile Island Incident) seems inappropriate. There are numerous
differences:
TMI was a power reactor. The Japanese plant was a fuel fabrication facility
and not a power plant (despite Tom Brokaw's claim last night that it was).
TMI involved a loss of coolant, not an accidental criticality.
No serious injuries resulted from radiation exposure at TMI, while the
Japanese incident will likely result in fatalities from acute radiation
exposures.
TMI had containment. The fuel fabrication plant did not.
