Reported Incident in Republic of Korea

The IAEA has contacted authorities in the Republic of Korea regarding an
incident reported in the media at the Wolsong-3 nuclear power plant. The
action was taken by the Agency's Emergency Response Centre in response to
requests for information from IAEA Member States. On 5 October 1999, Korean
authorities advised the IAEA of the following:
*	At 10:00 UTC on 4 October 1999, there was a spillage of heavy water
at the Wolsong Unit 3 in the Republic of Korea. The unit is under a planned
shutdown for maintenance. During the disassembly of the moderator pump,
40-50 liters of moderator spilled out due to damage of the pump seal.
*	All of the moderator that spilled out was immediately recovered.
*	There was no radiation exposure of the workers. There were 22
workers in the reactor building for the maintenance work.
The IAEA's Emergency Response Center is not expecting to take any further
action in connection with this event.
