BWCHPS OCT MEETING, Satisfied???

BALTIMORE-WASHINGTON CHAPTER OF THE HEALTH PHYSICS SOCIETY
OCTOBER 27, 1999 DINNER MEETING

SPEAKER: DR. BRYANT CRAMER, GODDARD SPACE FLIGHT CENTER

NEW MILLENNIUM PROGRAM

The BWCHPS is very please to have Dr. Bryant Cramer, Program Manager for the
activities of the New Millennium Program assigned to the Goddard Space Flight
Center, as our featured speaker. Dr. Bryant will talk to us about "The New
Millenium Program." Dr. Cramer's assignments presently include responsibility
for the Earth-Observing -1 Mission sponsored by the Office of Earth Science and
the Space Technology-5 Mission sponsored by the Office of Space Science.

The primary purpose of the New Millennium Program (NMP) is to flight-validate
new, revolutionary technologies that will lower the cost and enhance the
performance of future science missions. Secondary objectives include the
development of new techniques to facilitate technology infusion, to reduce the
risk, and to shorten the development time of future science missions. In
pursuing these objectives, the NMP promotes extensive partnering with industry
and academia to leverage NASA's investments in new technology.

The NMP was founded in 1994 at the Jet Propulsion Laboratory in Pasadena,
California and sponsored by the Office of Space Science at NASA Headquarters.
The following year, the Office of Earth Science at NASA Headquarters became a
co-sponsor of the NMP. To be selected for an NMP mission, a technology must
meet three criteria. It must enable high priority science objectives, require
the space environment for proper validation, and be revolutionary in nature
relative to the current state-of-the-art.

Presently, the NMP has five missions that have been launched or are in
development. Four of these are sponsored by the Office of Space Science and one
by the Office of Earth Science. The presentation will provide an overview of
the NMP and a description of each of these missions, focusing on their new
technologies and how these technologies will benefit future science missions.

Dr. Cramer has held this position since 1995. Prior to joining the New
Millennium Program, Dr. Cramer was the Senior Systems Engineer for the Earth
Observing System PM-1 Mission. Before coming to Goddard in 1993, Bryant was the
manager of the System Engineering Office of the Space Station Freedom Program
Office in Reston, Virginia.

Dr. Cramer's educational background includes doctorate degrees in both Medicine
and Engineering and he has been associated with the aerospace industry for over
thirty years. He is married and lives with his wife, Mary Anne, and their three
sons in Ellicott City, Maryland.
